Eco-Friendly Tips for Preventing Pest Infestation
At Bug Busters, it’s our sole mission to protect you and anyone else in your structure from a pest infestation. Our exterminators provide high-quality commercial and residential pest control services, and we do so with another prominent area in mind: Environmental quality and sustainability.
Wherever possible, we utilize organic, healthy products to help limit the presence of certain critters in or around your structures. All our products are fully EPA-approved for indoor use, even for areas like hospitals that have extremely high standards for toxicity. And while going completely “organic” within the world of pest control doesn’t simply mean eliminating every possible chemical used, there are a few smart products or themes you can consider if you want to help out in a green, eco-friendly way. Let’s take a look at several such alternatives.
Insect Barriers
For starters, insect barriers can be wildly beneficial products for those who have “weep holes” in brick or wall frames of their home or commercial building. Weep holes refer to spaces left in brick or other wall frames, allowing for proper ventilation and air flow in the space – but also potentially leaving open great hiding spots for certain pests.
Using one of several insect barriers you can purchase at any home improvement store, though, you can eliminate this risk for a very low cost and hassle. One example product is known as Bug Out, a weep hole barrier that closes off this additional space to all pest forms, but still allows air to flow properly in this area. There are other brands to consider here as well, and you can ask our pros if you’re unsure about which to purchase. These products eliminate a convenient nesting place for many pests without putting a single chemical into the air or killing a single bug.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are used for all sorts of purposes these days, and one where they can have some practical use is within pest prevention. A few specific essential oils, namely cinnamon bark, geranium and cedarwood, are all smells that pests hate – and they’re great for the environment, with minimal impact made at most.
Other Areas
There are a few other prevention areas that involve no harmful chemicals or inorganic products:
- Caulking: If cracks and crevices around your home’s exterior are allowed to form, pests will have easy entry points. Blocking them with caulking is the simplest way to prevent this from happening.
- Copper mesh: Another blocker material is copper mesh, which be placed virtually anywhere – window screens are a common example, but also consider items like gutter covers, which are also regularly used.
