Non-Bed Locations Where You Might Find Bedbugs, Part 1
If you paid attention only to their name, one would assume bedbugs are a pest that’s confined purely to beds, mattresses and related areas. Is this actually the reality regarding these at-times frustrating pests?
At Bug Busters, we’re here to answer this question with a firm “no.” While bedbugs do indeed tend to form in or around bed spaces, their true preference is simply to be in any habitat that’s surrounded by humans and has the right environmental characteristics. Our bedbug identification and extermination services, part of our overall pest control program, include this knowledge and may cover areas of your home beyond beds – part one of our two-part blog will dig into several additional home areas where you may find bedbugs, while part two will look at some common business areas where bedbugs may be found as well.
Wallpaper and Wall Hangings
One of the most common non-bed locations for bedbugs within the home is behind wallpaper, an area where they can easily fit comfortably based on their small size. Bedbugs love to inhabit little crevices and small spaces – down related lines, they may also invade the area behind pictures or other wall hangings you have present in your home. If there’s even a tiny gap between any of these items and your wall, chances are bedbugs can fit in it and may look to this area for shelter.
Baseboard and Flooring Areas
Speaking of small gap areas, baseboards and other forms of flooring offer several such opportunities in many homes. Check for any loose baseboards, and also examine carpet edges and any other openings to flooring that exist.
When you’re looking around these areas, you’re mostly checking for black streaks, black droppings, blood stains, insect skins or even active bedbugs. These bugs may be small and tan/translucent, or they could be about the size of an apple seed with a rust coloration – they develop over a period of time if they aren’t controlled.
Upholstery
Whether in your bedroom or elsewhere in the home, bedbugs are often attracted to upholstery areas where humans spend a lot of time. You don’t have to be sleeping for bedbugs to come around, and if you sit on a given chair or couch area often, don’t be shocked to see evidence of bedbugs if you have an infestation.
Inside Electronics
Finally, one area many are not aware of when it comes to bedbugs is their propensity to climb inside electronics. They have been found in devices ranging from alarm clocks to computers, TVs, stereos and even power outlets. In some cases, they may lead to electronic malfunctions as well.
