As winter gives way to spring and eventually summer, many folks are looking to spend more time outside on their property – including those who absolutely cannot wait to get to the heart of barbecuing season. What are some basic approaches you can take to preventing the presence of annoying pests and bugs during your weekly BBQ gatherings on the back porch? Here are some important areas to consider.

Yard Care

For starters, keeping up with general yard care can go a long way toward preventing pests – longer than you might have previously thought, in fact. Overgrown grass and weeds are not only unsightly, they’re also common homes for several pest types that you don’t want around.

If you keep the yard in great shape, many of these pests will simply die off or leave the property entirely. Plant natural herbs that repel insects, such as citronella or lavender, and generally keep the area groomed properly. If you notice any area that might be harboring invaders, address them sooner rather than later.

Covering Food

During the actual BBQ itself, and especially beforehand during the prep and cooking stages, be sure to cover food as best you can. Many pest types, especially ants, are drawn to the kinds of foods you’ll often be cooking on the barbecue, and just covering any food that sits out will go a long way to preventing these and various fly types from invading and possibly contaminating your food.

This doesn’t require any kind of special covering at all. Simply wrap the food in foil or plastic wrap, plus keep dishes of food inside until they absolutely need to be brought out for cooking or serving.

Bug Repellant

Even if you take all the proper steps, you have to be prepared for some standard visits from mosquitoes or other flying bugs that will smell the food and wonder what’s going on. In these cases, just keep some mosquito repellant and wasp spray on hand in case these pests are becoming a bit too annoying.

Spraying and Other Services

Finally, take advantage of our tree spraying and other outdoor services on a regular basis. Our spraying services include eradication of numerous insect types from your trees and nearby areas, and should be done once a year to keep up the integrity of your entire yard.
